Uncool age bracket

I’m convinced that people in their mid to late thirties are part of an uncool age bracket.  We are not the young 20-somethings anymore.  I feel like a fool if I try to shop in the junior’s department, even though some of the clothes are cute.  But that’s just it.  Cute?  I’m not 12, nor would I fit in junior’s clothes, and nothing I wear should have glitter on it.  Period.

When I was in my twenties, at my first real job out of college, some of the people I worked with were old.  Like 35+ old.  Yeah, that seemed “old” to me back then.  Strange tastes, strange sense of humor, some seemed stuck in the 80′s.  But, now that I think about it, some people are STILL stuck in the 80′s.  LOL!

Fast forward to the present and this uncool age bracket notion becomes even more apparent to me when I’m in class.  Half the class is probably in their early to mid twenties and the other half are like 50+.  Then there’s me.  Right smack in the middle at age 35.  Not really cool anymore.  Although was I ever?  LOL!  And not really old enough to gain the respect that the older students get.   I sometimes feel like it’s a struggle to fit in, or with conversations.  I don’t know what’s “in” all the time when I compare myself to the young students and I also sometimes can’t relate to the older students when they begin stories with “oh you probably don’t remember this, you were too young.”  Even though I’ve got 10-15 years on the youngest in the class.

Luckily we all share the same goal, to get our degree and enter the design field.  We can relate to one another that way.

That will be interesting as well.  When it comes time to fight for jobs, will the youngsters be too green?  Will the older folks get overlooked?

Maybe mid-thirties is just right?. . .

Now, I just need to work on that uncool wardrobe I’ve got going on!
